April 30, 2008: TOTM Export FM Data into Excel

Tip of the Month: Exporting Your FileMaker Data into Excel

This is a handy trick to know that will certainly impress your boss or co-workers. Being able to export the data in your FileMaker databse into an excel spreadsheet. This will enable you to send reports on your data not only to people in your company, but those outside your company who do not have access to your database. Here is how you do it:

1) Do a find for the set of records that you want exported to Excel.
2) Choose “File”
3) Choose “Save/ Send Records As...”
4) You can choose either Excel or PDF, choose “Excel”
5) Under File Name, name your XLS file
6) Under Save as Type, choose where you want to save the file to
7) Under Save, select “Records Being Browsed”
8) Under After Saving, check the box “Automatically Open File”
9) Then click “Save”

Your excel document will then open up on your desktop and you are the hero of the office.

SolutionMakers has been an integral partner in our company’s growth and evolution over the past several years. In fact, the staff at SMI are more familiar with the intricacies of our very unique business model than most of our employees! SMI’s expertise has allowed us to eliminate massive bottlenecks and inefficiencies in our workflows, and we’ve now achieved the ultimate goal of just about every SMB: having an integrated business software and accounting system that’s perfectly tailored to our specific needs. The system that SMI built for us is amazingly stable and scalable, and will continue to grow with us for many years to come.

Best of all, SMI’s outstanding reputation within the FileMaker development community has allowed it to attract a multitalented staff whose areas of expertise are truly impressive and time-tested. For most small to medium businesses, it’s far more practical and cost-effective to hire a team of expert developers to tackle software projects than to bring such work-in house. It is always a pleasure to work with SMI developers, and we very much consider them part of our team here. I look forward to many more years of close collaboration with Laura and her fantastic staff.
